MANCHESTER, Ky. (FOX 56) — Amid the high summer heat, a federal program is helping households stay cool.

As of Monday, applications are now open for the low-income home energy assistance program’s (LIHEAP) summer subsidy initiative.

Until Sept. 12, the Daniel Boone Community Action Agency (CAC) and other local CAC agencies are accepting applications for the Low-Income Heat Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program helps eligible households facing home heating emergencies like imminent loss of heat, low fuel supply, or eviction due to unpaid utility bills.

To qualify, applicants must be at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines.

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

The community service director for the Daniel Boone community action agency, Kim Stevens, said a program like this can be crucial for families and help take a weight off households that were already stretched thin

“With inflation being on the increase and school beginning to start back, we’re going to have a lot of households that have children that’s going to have to be out for school supplies, school clothes. Right now is a good time to be able to give them this benefit towards a high electric bill that most are at this time, and to be able to help reduce that burden for that household, said Stevens.

What you need to bring when you apply:

  • Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent
Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the family
    household.

  • Proof of all household members’ income from the
    preceding month.

  • Current electric service bill, or statement from your
landlord if they are included in your rent, or statement
from the utility company if you participate in a pre-pay.

The Daniel Boone office offers assistance to Clay, Jackson, Laurel, and Rockcastle counties.

You can apply through your local Community Action Agency office. To locate your local office, call 800-456-3452 or visit the website.
