A man who was killed in a shooting in Fitchburg earlier this month has been identified as 63-year-old Fitchburg resident Luis Mejia, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Fitchburg police responded to the Mechanic Street area for reports that a person had been shot, the district attorney’s office said previously. At the scene, officers found Mejia outside a car with a single gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead a short time later.

Authorities arrested 42-year-old New Jersey resident Jonathan Reyes-Contreras in connection with Mejia’s death within a day of the shooting, the district attorney’s office said. The initial investigation suggested that Reyes-Contreras knew Mejia.

Reyes-Contreras pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and two gun charges in connection with the shooting during his arraignment in Fitchburg District Court on Aug. 4, court records show. Following a dangerousness hearing on Aug. 7, he was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.

No further information about the case has been released.
