Take A Closer Look At Bugatti Solitaire's First One-Off

When Bugatti created La Voiture Noire as a tribute to the fourth (and still missing) Type 57 SC Atlantic, the mystique surrounding the car created a worldwide buzz. Four years on, Bugatti wants to give some of that magic to new owners with the vision and wherewithal to commission a one-off bespoke hypercar with the launch of the Solitaire program. Think of this as Molsheim's answer to the Rolls-Royce Coachbuild division, responsible for ultra low-volume beauties like the Boat Tail. Solitaire's first creation is named Brouillard, and it's stunning from every angle. Let's take a closer look

Even from a distance, and even with unique design elements, the Brouillard is easily identifiable as a Bugatti with a wide stance, large side intakes, and a gaping horseshoe grille.

Don't believe the image you see above - the horse that inspired the Brouillard had a "coat as white as the first snowfall, speckled with the subtle shades of a summer morning mist," says Bugatti.

The rear of the hypercar shows some previously seen Bugatti design cues, like stacked tailpipes from the Centodieci and a cross-shaped taillight setup from the W16 Mistral.

Although this is a one-off that will likely never be pushed to extremes by its commissioning owner, the shapes employed show a strong aerodynamic influence that hints at breathtaking performance.

Bugatti claims a 0-62 mph time of just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 236 mph from the 1,578-horsepower, 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W16 engine, though we doubt the owner will risk stone chips on the luscious green paint very often.

In profile, the curve of the rear haunches makes the rear wheels seem considerably bigger than the fronts, and the use of copious amounts of dark carbon fiber creates additional negative space between the floor and glasshouse that helps the body appear slimmer, as if floating above the ground.

The straked hood makes the front end a little busier, but it's complemented by four horizontal DRLs in each headlight cluster, not to mention the large air guides ahead of the front wheel. Any more sharp details may have made the front too busy, but the overall design is balanced.

Although the car looks far more aggressive and sinuous than a Chiron, and although the design incorporates newer principles, the two scoops that feed the engine provide a hint that this vehicle is still powered by a W16.

Very much like the upcoming Tourbillon, this Bugatti's front horseshoe is far wider, but the overall frontal area has been reduced compared to past Bugs, promising to maximize top speed potential.

The tinted carbon fiber air guides aft of the front wheels display the hypercar's name and its one-off status. Although not depicted, the area on the C-pillar has another neat design element: a Rembrandt Bugatti elephant badge.

The closer one looks, the more evident Bugatti's obsession with detail becomes. Take the taillights, for example, which appear to be relatively basic LEDs from a distance but display complex multi-strand filaments up close.

The Brouillard's cabin shows more appreciation for the subtle details, with green carbon fiber trims, machined aluminum switchgear, and a shifter with a glass inseer that features a hand-sculpted depiction of company founder Ettore Bugatti's favorite horse, which inspired this hypercar and lent it its name.

More horse motifs appear on the seat backs and door cards, both of which exhibit a tartan pattern that is repeated in the hand grips of the steering wheel.

The intrusion of the roof's spine into the cabin emphasizes the high-performing nature of the hypercar, but the glass roof still makes the cabin space feel roomy.

A grand creation, the 1,578-horsepower Brouillard marks the start of a new level of luxury and exclusivity from the modern Bugatti, resurrecting the coachbuilding element of its business that created some of the most beautiful cars ever.

Like any new car, the process begins with a sketch. Only "one or two" Solitaire creations are planned per year, and potential customers chosen from a select pool of Bugatti loyalists will need to set aside seven or eight figures to have their own one-off come to life. If you're at Monterey Car Week this month, the Brouillard will show its face in public for the first time. After that, it will likely become almost as elusive as the fourth Type 57 SC Atlantic.
