TONIGHT: Sobriety checkpoint in NE Ohio

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (WJW) – There are multiple sobriety checkpoints planned across northern Ohio in the coming days.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, an OVI checkpoint will take place on Thursday in Port Clinton. The checkpoint will be set up on Perry Street from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

In addition, officials said, motorists can expect nearby saturation patrols.

The goal of the checkpoint is to deter and intercept impaired drivers.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink,” stated a press release. “Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.”

In addition to the checkpoints planned in Ottawa County, officials have announced checkpoints for Summit and Stark counties set for Friday night. CLICK HERE for those details.

In 1990, the Supreme Court upheld the use of sobriety checkpoints as long as they meet certain guidelines, which includes public notification.
