1,025 hp and bespoke finishes have turned this into the most desirable R1S yet

Rivian’s R1S is one of the nicest three-row electric SUVs on the market, assuming you can afford one. Fully loaded, it’s possible to spend over $125,000 on an R1S Quad Launch Edition, a sum that gets you a great combination of performance and luxury—as it should.

But an even more exclusive, one-of-one version of the R1S just sold for much more than that at a Monterey Car Week auction. The R1S Quad Pebble Beach is a collector’s item with gorgeous finishes and materials, and proceeds from its sale will go to charity.

Broad Arrow Auctions handled the sale of this R1S, which was estimated to be sold for around $130,000. In a live stream of the auction posted yesterday, that figure was soon surpassed, and the R1S Quad Pebble Beach eventually went for $175,000. That’s significantly more than what you’d pay for the range-topping Cadillac Escalade IQL, which is the most luxurious and largest electric SUV you can get your hands on right now.

Proceeds from the auction will be donated to WaterAid and #TeamWater. This is a crowdfunding campaign that aims to enhance access to clean water for millions of people around the globe.

So, it's all for a good cause, but what makes this R1S so special as an electric SUV?

The R1S Quad Pebble Beach is finished in a bespoke color called Monterey Silver, created specifically for this vehicle. Rivian says the hue is inspired by the morning light over Monterey Bay, with its soft and golden quality. A hand-applied, four-stage process was involved in creating this color, which has immense depth and the reflective qualities of liquid metal.

Contrasting with the stunning paintwork are brake calipers in Laguna Beach Blue, along with badging in the same color. The SUV rides on 22-inch wheels, also with a unique design in a three-tone finish. Custom-etched door sill plates and exterior lighting animations are other touches reserved for this R1S.

Under the skin lies the most potent powertrain available in the R1S. Four electric motors combine for 1,025 horsepower, sending this practical family vehicle to 60 mph in only 2.6 seconds. The quarter-mile takes just 10.5 seconds, yet the Rivian can transition to sand or gravel surfaces effortlessly.

Rivian’s Best Interior Yet?

The standard Rivian R1S already has a lovely cabin. Yes, it mainly relies on screens like many other modern rivals, but it avoids austerity thanks to the company’s use of interesting fabrics and warm wood trim. The R1S Quad Pebble Beach further builds on this impressive foundation.

This “Coastal Canvas” cabin has Pebble Stone-inspired Adventex upholstery. This, together with cork blended textiles and textured wood accents, is said to echo the tones of Big Sur cliffs and ocean mist. We’ll simply say that it manages to look bright and breezy yet warm and inviting at the same time.

A gradient finish throughout the interior blends teal blue, vivid red, and golden yellow, the signature colors of Rivian’s skunkworks team.

“The R1S Pebble Beach Edition was born from a desire to break conventions,” said Jeff Hammoud, Rivian Chief Design Officer. “We set out to create a vehicle that masterfully balances supercar-level performance with refined capability and artistry.”

Whether or not it’s worth $175k is up for debate, but the R1S Quad Pebble Beach is the nicest yet example of the EV maker’s SUV.
