Sixth-Gen F-Series Trucks Get Modern Underpinnings And Power

Classic cars ooze style, but often, they also ooze vital fluids. Modern cars tend to be more reliable, but less interesting to look at and live with. The solution? An old-school body on top of a new Roadster Shop chassis powered by a Coyote V8. That's the recipe Velocity Modern Classics followed to make ownership of fifth-generation "Bumpside" Ford F-Series pickups from 1967 to 1972 feasible and fun, and now the same method is being applied to the sixth-gen bodystyle, known as the "Dentside," produced by Ford from 1973 to 1979. Available for the Ford F-100, F-150, and F-250, the new range offers plenty of choices, but let's see what you get as standard.

Each vehicle in the family is equipped with a Ford Performance Gen III 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine generating 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, with a Ford 10R80 automatic transmission managing the output. The engine breathes through a custom exhaust with MagnaFlow mufflers on all variants, but there are differences elsewhere. For example, the F-100, positioned as a street-focused offering, has independent front suspensions, a Ford 9-inch rear axle, and Baer brakes, while the more off-road-capable four-wheel-drive F-150 and F-250 options get solid Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear axles with Wilwood disc brakes on all four corners. Retractable running boards make getting in and out a little easier.

Beyond the standard Signature Series, the Street Series for the F-100 adds two-way adjustable Fox coilovers and six-piston brake calipers with 14-inch discs, as well as 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Forgeline wheels.

A chrome grille with a Ford wordmark sits between LED headlights, with a chrome bumper lower down. As the nickname suggests, earlier Bumpside vehicles had a bulge running down the shoulder line, while these Dentside vehicles have a recess in this area. Velocity can accentuate this with the option of two-tone paint, and the company also offers custom billet door and tailgate handles, side mirrors, and hood badging.

Not Cheap, But Plenty Of Modern Enhancements

The cabin features a custom leather bench seat and a wood steering wheel (optionally, a lether-wrapped Sparc Industries steering wheel is also available), and Velocity continues the exterior theme of billet accenting with its interior door handles, window crank handles, window pulls, and dash knobs, all machined in-house. An Alpine Bluetooth-enabled double-DIN head unit and a backup camera also feature alongside a Vintage Air climate control system. Numerous paint and trim options are available, but with a base MSRP of $279,900 before options, this truck is priced high enough to make a Mustang GTD look over its shoulder. That's quite a price to pay for an almost thoroughly new vehicle that just happens to look 50 years old, but quality rarely comes cheap.
