After polling automotive experts, these five models appeared again and again in their responses.
Honda CR-V
Starting Price: $31,495 (Kelley Blue Book)
If you want a reliable family SUV that requires minimal maintenance, look no further than the CR-V. It comes in hybrid trims, as well, for even better fuel efficiency.
“The Honda CR-V has been a bestseller for over two decades thanks to its reliability, flexible interior and low ownership costs,” explained Zach Shefska, CEO of CarEdge. “It’s one of the safest bets for buyers who want a compact SUV that won’t spend much time in the repair shop.”
In fact, Kelley Blue Book ranked it first among compact SUVs this year.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Starting Price: $30,645
As the chief competitor to the CR-V, the RAV4 has long remained a favorite compact, affordable SUV for good cause. They offer a reliable, safe family ride that lasts decades.
Carl Rodriguez, founder of NX Auto Transport, credited the RAV4’s longevity to its state-of-the-art corrosion protect. “The RAV4 Hybrid is statistically the most reliable SUV of 2025. It was reported to have only 9.68% insurance claim rate, which is seriously impressive.”
It comes as no surprise that J.D. Power named the RAV4 the most dependable compact SUV in this year’s rankings.
Toyota 4Runner
Starting Price: $41,650
In the market for a more rugged SUV? Check out the Toyota 4Runner, which is essentially a body-on-frame truck that looks like an SUV.
Marc Skirvin salvages old, abandoned cars as the founder of Cash Auto Salvage, and sees plenty of old 4Runners continue to perform even after two decades. “While built like trucks, they are capable of topping 300,000 miles with consistent maintenance,” he noted. “We see 4Runners come through here every day with engines and transmissions that are still running strong from the early 2000s.”
Honda Pilot
Starting Price: $41,650
If you’re looking for a three-row SUV, the Honda Pilot is hard to beat. From safety to dependability, they make great family workhorses.
“That V6 engine is incredibly reliable, and Honda’s reputation for reliability is not a marketing ploy,” added Skirvin. “In our junkyard, we get a lot of shattered Chevy Traverses and Ford Explorers — not Pilots.”
Lexus GX 550
Starting Price: $65,585
As a luxury option, the Lexus GX 550 remains the top dog for reliability. Toyota’s upscale brand brings the same quality control and fine-tuned manufacturing as its parent.
“The redesigned Lexus GX combines luxury with serious off-road capability,” explained Shefska. “It’s also much more reliable than the competition. According to CarEdge data, owners can expect to spend about $2,700 on maintenance over the first five years of ownership.”
That’s impressive for any full-size SUV, but doubly so for a luxury car. Sure enough, Consumer Reports ranked Lexus the second-most reliable brand in 2025, beating out even its parent company Toyota.
