You could say he Avada Kedavra’d it. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) and his social media team were so busy trolling the GOP over the weekend that they completely forgot to wish Stephen Miller a happy 40th birthday on Saturday. So, on Sunday, Newsom’s office published a belated birthday post on X that’s fit for a snake.

“Happy birthday, @StephenM! Sorry we missed your big day yesterday,” the post read, alongside an image of Voldemort — the main antagonist in the Harry Potter series — wearing a birthday hat and smiling:

Beyond a physical resemblance, the real-life Republican and the fictional villain have some other things in common. In the Harry Potter series, Voldemort is the head of an extremist hate group called the Death Eaters, while Miller is a heavily influential member of the MAGA movement. Voldemort and Miller also rely on xenophobia to cultivate fear in their followers.

Miller’s cruel immigration policies, hyperfixation on border security, and links to white nationalism echo Voldemort’s insistence that “pure blood” wizards were superior to “mudbloods” or wizards of mixed heritage. And although Newsom’s birthday post to Miller is comedic magic, it is not the first time he’s compared Miller to “He Who Shall Not Be Named.”

In June, a Harry Potter fan account published a post on X that claimed that the role of Voldemort in the upcoming HBO series had been cast, but was being kept a secret. In response to the post, the California governor’s press office account simply posted in response: “Congrats, @StephenM!”:
