Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Tuesday will announce the Trump administration’s enforcement of English proficiency rules for commercial vehicle drivers.
President Trump penned an executive order in April that requires all commercial truck drivers operating in the U.S. to be proficient in English. The president designated English as the country’s official language in a separate order in March.
The latest moves also come after the administration paused worker visas for foreign truck drivers, arguing the growing number of international, commercial operators is putting the lives of Americans in danger. The announcement followed a crash in Florida that killed three people. Harjinder Singh, a commercial truck driver, was accused of making an illegal U-turn resulting in the deaths.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT.
