Why The Toxic Avenger Fans Are Walking Out of Early Screenings

The Toxic Avenger has reportedly witnessed walkouts during its early screenings. The movie serves as a reboot of the horror film series of the same name. It’s also a remake of the namesake 1984 movie. Macon Blair wrote and directed the new feature.

The Toxic Avenger fans claim screenings are causing walkouts due to its gore

Audience members who have attended early screenings of The Toxic Avenger report major walkouts. @Danbremner1996 took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared, “Most walkouts I’ve ever had with a screening at the Odeon Scream Unseen of The Toxic Avenger.”

u/PotatoPixie90210 detailed a similar experience on Reddit. “Four people left once the title card came up,” they shared. “Then another four after about 10/15 minutes. Stopped counting after another few people got up to go as well.”

The poster and the people who went to theaters with them ultimately left around 40 minutes. “Just god awful,” they added in the post. Some fans claim that the walkouts are due to the heavy dosage of gore in the movie.

Although both @Danbremner1996 and u/PotatoPixie90210 seem to claim that they didn’t like the film, the walkouts might not be happening because it is bad. As some reviews indicate, the remake appears to be quite faithful to the original feature, while depicting gore on screen, and is deeply entrenched in the splatter subgenre of horror.

The movie currently has an 88% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 34 reviews.

As mentioned above, the new Toxic Avenger movie serves as a reboot of the Toxic Avenger film series, which includes the aforementioned 1984 feature, The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000).

The cast includes Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, Kevin Bacon as Bob Garbinger, Elijah Wood as Fritz Garbinger, and Jacob Tremblay as Wade Gooze. Dinklage provides the voice for the eponymous superhero, with Luisa Guerreiro serving as the suit performer.

The Toxic Avenger premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 21, 2023. It debuts in US theaters on August 29, 2025.
