A highly sought-after piece of BMW M Division history has surfaced on Bring a Trailer, as a 1988 BMW M3 Evolution II, chassis number 151 of just 500 examples built, is now up for grabs. Recently imported from Japan by its current owner, the Misano Red coupe now resides in Oregon under dealer consignment with a clean Carfax report and Washington title.

BMW developed the Evolution II variant of the E30 M3 to meet Group A homologation requirements in the late 1980s. These models featured key upgrades including thinner side and rear glass, improved aerodynamics, and a more potent version of the S14 2.3-liter inline-four engine. In this example, the revised four-cylinder delivers 217 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, thanks to a higher compression ratio and changes to the head, camshaft, and ECU.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The car also benefits from factory suspension upgrades, including shorter and stiffer springs and a thicker rear anti-roll bar. Bilstein dampers and 16-inch basketweave wheels wrapped in fresh Pirelli P700-Z tires provide the finishing touch.

Inside, the M3 features gray Uberkaro cloth and leather sport seating, a period-correct AM/FM cassette stereo, an M-Tech II steering wheel, cruise control, and air conditioning converted to R134a refrigerant. A numbered plaque confirms its place as car #151 in the Evolution II production run. Minor flaws include an intermittently faulty tachometer and visible scratches on the gauge faces.

With just 76,000 kilometers (about 47,000 miles) on the odometer, this rare homologation special represents a unique opportunity for collectors and E30 enthusiasts alike.
