Idaho 21 near Stanley is back open after a mudslide made a nearly 12-mile stretch of the road impassable after heavy rains Tuesday.
The Boise County Sheriff’s Office announced the closure of the highway Tuesday from Grandjean at milepost 93.7 to Banner Summit at milepost 105.5, according to the Idaho Transportation Department.
Crews couldn’t start the cleanup process Tuesday or Wednesday because of rain and unsafe conditions, but the department hoped to get the road back open by Thursday, ITD said in a statement.
Tuesday evening thunderstorms rolled into Treasure Valley and up into the mountains, which produced record-breaking “precipitable water,” the National Weather Service said in a Facebook post.

The National Weather Service told the Idaho Statesman that it had recorded half an inch of rain at the Boise Airport in the past 24 hours and between 0.75 and 1.5 inches in areas near Grandjean.
The Weather Service issued a warning Tuesday that “heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding or debris flows in and near recent wildfire burn scars.”
The Grandjean area experienced significant wildfire damage from the Wapiti Fire that burned nearly 130,000 acres in 2024.
