Only 106 Speedtails were made, and this could be the finest example
McLaren’s Ultimate Series of models represent the pinnacle of the brand’s technological, performance, and design expertise. The McLaren W1 is one of the more recent additions to the series, but a few years before that, the brand launched the Speedtail. With three seats, an incredibly powerful hybrid powertrain, and exotic proportions designed to eliminate drag, it’s a special machine, so when one comes up for sale, everyone sits up and takes notice. You’ll need at least $1.5 million to afford the one you see here, though, which is going up for auction in Monterey this month.

This Speedtail Has Barely Been Driven

This 2020 McLaren Speedtail has covered a mere 71 miles, so is in showroom condition. Part of the reason it has barely been driven is that the Speedtail is technically not road-legal in the United States because of missing features like conventional exterior mirrors. However, it can be owned here under the Show or Display exemption, but that limits annual mileage to 2,500 miles annually.
Let’s get into what makes this car special, though. It’s powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 paired with an electric motor. Combined, the system produces 1,035 horsepower, and it’s capable of reaching a top speed of 250 mph.
This example is number 85 of just 106 total Speedtails to be produced, and is finished in McLaren Special Operations Fresno Valentina Violet. Originally carrying a sticker price of around $2.67 million, this one also has close to $250,000 worth of options, including the MSO Roof Scoop that added $112,500 on its own. The Speedtail’s elongated body is still breathtaking several years after we first saw it, but it’s not only visually appealing; this is the most aerodynamically drag efficient McLaren ever.
Vintage Tan Interior Is Unblemished

The Fresno Valentina Violet paint contrasts beautifully with the full aniline leather interior, finished in Vintage Tan. One of the Speedtail’s most innovative features is its three-seater layout, with the driver seated in the middle, flanked by two passenger seats further back on each side.
You enter via dramatic vertical dihedral doors before settling in the Speedtail’s luxurious cabin, which is built around a carbon fiber tub that saves weight. The upholstery and trim options added around $125,000 to the base price, and includes bits like polished Zircon trim, Magnetite elements, and the appealing use of titanium.
A car cover, wireless base charger, factory luggage case, and chassis-numbered toolkit will all be offered as part of the auction, which takes place on 16 August. Number 85 has been serviced and inspected by McLaren in both Scottsdale, Arizona, and Newport Beach, California.
RM Sotheby’s estimates this bespoke Speedtail will sell for between $1.5 and $2 million, making it one of the most expensive cars in the world.
