As home prices soar across much of the U.S., Americans are increasingly looking for more affordable places to put down roots.

A recent report by MSN, using data from GoBankingRates, identified the cheapest cities to buy a home in every state, and this small Alabama town offers a surprising value for homebuyers.

To determine these affordable locations, GoBankingRates analyzed data from the Zillow Home Value Index and U.S. Census Bureau population statistics to identify areas where home prices are a steal.

Cheapest housing market in Alabama

According to the data featured in the MSN report, Selma ranks as the most affordable city in Alabama to buy a home, with a median listing price of just $31,951.

According to Zillow, the average home in the U.S. is valued at $369,147. That's more than 168% lower than the nation's average home value and a 151% difference from Alabama's average home value of $234,052.

Selma, steeped in Civil Rights history and Southern culture, offers not only low prices but a slower pace of life that appeals to retirees and remote workers alike.

With a population of 2,121, it lacks the hustle and bustle of Huntsville or Montgomery, but for those prioritizing homeownership over a fast-paced lifestyle, Selma delivers serious value.

  • Mobile: $198,420
