Porsche Has To Fix Its Dumb Decision
Porsche Has To Fix Its Dumb Decision

Back a couple of years ago, Porsche made a big deal about how it would make the next-gen Macan strictly an EV. As the most popular model in the German automaker’s lineup, that move seemed rater bold. But “everyone knew” all-electric cars were the future, so Porsche went all in and the move was largely cheered.

Lamborghini sues a dealer for selling supercars to unauthorized shoppers.

Fast forward to the present and Porsche is starting to realize what a dumb decision that was. While the automaker of course won’t admit any wrongdoing, CEO Oliver Blume recently revealed that a new compact, gas-powered crossover is coming to fill the void vacated by the Macan going all-electric.

That shocking revelation (pun intended) was made during a recent investor call reports Road & Track and people seem to be rather confused.

You can’t really blame them. After all, why was Porsche so shortsighted that it didn’t just make a gas-powered version of the new Macan, offering that simultaneously with the Macan Electric? It doesn’t make any sense, especially as we’re seeing EVs aren’t the future, at least not right now.

Like we recently covered, Porsche is starting to realize its recent approach to the market is all sorts of wrong. It went hard on EVs and that’s backfiring, plus tariffs levied against its exports to the US, a key market for the brand, are costing it dearly.

The unnamed new compact Porsche crossover will apparently be offered with a gas engine and in a hybrid form. It’s supposed to hit the market no later than 2028, thanks to “very short development times.”

In other words, Porsche has only recently decided to make this product, realizing the error of its ways. While everyone makes mistakes, the admirable part is the automaker is willing to do what it takes to correct the problem instead of whining and pointing fingers.

But switching the Macan, its top seller, to strictly all-electric was a dumb move.
