Ford has filed a trademark for the name "Ranchero," which could be an indicator of its reported upcoming EV mid-sized pickup truck.
The new trademark was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on August 5.
The news comes less than a week out from an event at Ford's Kentucky plant, which CEO Jim Farley said would be a modern "Model T moment" for the brand.
Ford has filed a trademark for the name "Ranchero," according to a new report from Ford Authority. The patent was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) under the international class 12, which covers automobiles.
The trademark was filed on August 5, coming less than a week after Ford CEO Jim Farley hinted at a "breakthrough" in EV technology. So what exactly is that breakthrough? We still don't know, but thankfully, we shouldn't have to wait long. The filing also comes less than a week away from the August 11 event, where Ford is expected to launch a flexible new EV platform.

Official details on the next-generation EV platform are light, but we know Ford wanted it to be capable of supporting several body styles. One style in particular that we expect to see is a Ranger-sized pickup. That could be where the Ranchero trademark comes in.
Look at the Lightning and the Maverick. Both of the last two pickups Ford introduced have names pulled straight from old Ford catalogues. And the Ranchero? Well, that was a two-door, car-based pickup sold from the mid-1950s through the late 1970s. It's not guaranteed that Ford plans to revive the name for an upcoming electric truck, but the filing does suggest that the blue oval has something in mind for the badge.
