During Monterey Car Week this year, Petersen Automotive Museum is celebrating 80s and 90s cars with a unique display. Set up at the swanky Quail, the “Totally Awesome” exhibit features some iconic rides from the era as well as throwback display elements.
Gunther Werks reveals the GWX.
A mini version of the recently opened “Totally Awesome!” exhibit at the museum in Los Angeles, the display is set up in the main entrance area so you can’t miss it.
Six cool cars are part of the space, each one an icon in its own rite. They are a Jaguar XJ220, BMW E30 M3 Evo, Alfa SZ, Bugatti EB110, Nissan Skyline GTR 400 R, and the Ferrari 308 that was famously used in Magnum PI.

If you’re in Monterey this week, you can catch the display from 9 am to 4 pm on Friday, August 15 at The Quail, which technically is in Carmel.
Of course, the exhibit of 80s and 90s cars at Petersen Automotive Museum is far larger. It also dives more into how expanding mass media and the dawn of the digital age impacted car design and culture. Both production and concept vehicles are on display there.
We know some enthusiasts, particularly those of the older generations, get all riled up when anyone refers to an 80s vehicle as a classic car. The fact is they’re relatively older than a 50s car was in the 80s. And yes, they’re technically classics.
Getting older can be a bummer, especially for people who used to mock the old and say they’re never be in that position. But life comes at you fast and the tables sure turn quickly.
