Hitting the track for its first shakedown, Genesis Magma Racing is showing off its GMR-001 Hypercar for the 2026 FIA WEC season. It’s a big step forward for the fledgling luxury brand, which is eager to show it has the stuff to hang with the big boys.
According to Genesis, the car which stretched its legs at Le Castellet in southern France is the first of three development chassis. Those will in turn be used to develop and homologize the GMR-001 before next year’s race season begins.
In other words, this isn’t the finished product, but it gives us a good idea of what that will look like. The team announced it was entering FIA WEC just last December, so it’s making wonderful progress toward being ready for competition.
“We are at a time, where we seem to be passing milestones every day, but this is exactly what we must be doing.” said Genesis Magma Racing Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul. “After planning for and talking about these moments for the last eight months, to be able to see a finished car running exactly as we planned is incredibly exciting.”
There’s still a lot left to do to get the team ready for the season, not to mention the car.
With the first shakedown, drivers André Lotterer and Pipo Derani were finally able to experience the GMR-001 firsthand. With the electrical and mechanical systems sorted out, the plan is to hit up a long list of circuits around Europe for additional testing.
The drivers will continue to work in simulators, with some design changes applied and tested there before being used on the track.
It seems like everyone associated with Genesis Magma Racing is pumped to finally jump in the ring next year.
