We’d love to see a matchup between this and Rivian’s R1S

Almost a year after the Lucid Gravity went into production, the EV maker is exploring a number of unique applications for the large SUV. Last month, Lucid announced that it has confirmed a six-year deal with Uber to deploy thousands of self-driving Gravity robotaxis, and now, the company has unveiled the Gravity X Concept. This will be of greater interest to the average motorist, as it previews a possible trail-ready, production version of the Gravity. How does it differ from the standard model? Let’s take a closer look.

A Tougher, More Capable Gravity

The Lucid Gravity X (Gravity Cross) concept is based on the Gravity Grand Touring, one of the more lavishly equipped trims available to buyers. But it immediately looks more rugged, from the new front and rear fascias to the raised ride height. Approach and departure angles have been improved, but Lucid doesn’t say by how much. At a glance, it doesn’t look like it’s going to challenge a Land Rover Defender in any way.

The Gravity X also gets a widened track and custom wheels with all-terrain tires. Skid plates are equipped to protect key components when clambering over challenging obstacles, and there are integrated tow hooks.

To further distinguish this model from other Gravity models, this one gets orange accents that contrast with the Astral Drift paint, which has a satin finish. The front and rear fascias also get brushed metal finishes. Finally, there are topography maps of Big Sur and Death Valley on the recesses of the hood.

A bespoke roof rack and Gravity X wording on the doors complete the transformation, and we’ve got to say, this is one good-looking concept.

Subtle Changes In The Cabin

Lucid said very little about the concept’s interior, only pointing out the unique sill plates. From the images, though, we can see attractive orange stitching on the seats and orange accents on the door panels. These contrast nicely with the matte wood and dark upholstery.

Powertrain specifications were also not mentioned, but since the concept is based on the Grand Touring, we expect it to get dual motors producing 828 horsepower combined, so it'll be extremely quick. The all-terrain tires and other changes will probably shave a few miles off the range, but the Grand Touring already has 450 miles to play with, so the concept should still get quite far between recharges.

"Lucid Gravity has redefined the limits of what an uncompromising SUV can achieve. The Lucid Gravity X concept expands on these core principles to explore new possibilities off the beaten path while showcasing the incredible capabilities of the Lucid Gravity," said Derek Jenkins, SVP Design and Brand at Lucid. "Lucid's range, power and versatility make it an ideal vehicle for those adventurers looking to explore further offroad."

If it ever goes into production, the Gravity X’s most natural rival would be the Rivian R1S, one of the few three-row electric SUVs you’d dare to take off-road.
