Car strikes concrete barrier on U.S. 71 in Kansas City; driver in critical condition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A person is in critical condition after they hit a concrete barrier on U.S. 71 highway early Wednesday morning, Kansas City police said.

The crash happened just after midnight in the northbound lanes of U.S. 71 near 51st Street.

According to a summary from Kansas City police, a person driving a Honda Civic, that was speeding, sideswiped a Hyundai Kona. After hitting the Hyundai, the Honda went off the road and hit the center median concrete barrier head-on.

The driver of the Honda, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai was not injured. The crash investigation is ongoing.
