Pueblo police arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of attempted first-degree homicide 10 days after a 13-year-old girl was shot near the Pueblo Riverwalk, police officials announced July 29.

Romello Hernandez was arrested July 24 in connection with the shooting, which took place near the 200 block of West Riverwalk on July 14.

Police responded to a report of a juvenile girl with a gunshot wound in a parking lot near Lake Elizabeth at around 2:50 a.m. that morning, police previously told the Chieftain.

The girl was in life-threatening condition when she was brought into a local hospital, according to Bianca Hicks, a spokesperson for the Pueblo Police Department. However, Pueblo Police Capt. Dustin Taylor told the Chieftain on July 29 that the victim was no longer in critical condition and was improving.

Anyone with any information on the shooting is asked to contact Detective Jose Medina at 719-553-3296. Anyone who prefers to remain anonymous may contact Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-7867 (STOP).

As of Tuesday afternoon, Hernandez was being held in the Pueblo County jail on a $500,000 cash or surety bond. He will make his first appearance in the court of Judge William Alexander on July 31.
