Mississippi candidates must meet updated qualifications to run for office

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The days of statewide election candidates using a P.O. Box as their registered address are over.

State Rep. Kevin Felsher (R-District 117) said he and State Rep. Shanda Yates (I-District 64) worked on House Bill 811 for about two years. They received input from other lawmakers, including State Sen. Jeremy England (R-District 51).

“We wanted to use residential address now, so we brought that into this bill,” explained England.

The law, which was signed by Gov. Tate Reeves (R-Miss.), stated that state executive committees will be penalized if they fail to get all documents and fees taken care of by 6:00 p.m. on the qualifying date.

“The penalty, I believe, is $500 per document, up to $2,500. So, it’s not too punitive,” said Felsher.
