Kia Canada has teamed up with a West Coast company with technology to bring electric-vehicle chargers to older homes without the costly electrical upgrades often required.
Variablegrid Adaptive Power Inc., headquartered in North Vancouver, uses adaptive load management technology to monitor home energy usage and automatically adjust power to the charger based on available capacity. The system lets customers forgo upsizing their electrical panels, an upgrade that can cost up to $10,000.
Kia Canada will sell the system at its dealerships and let customers bundle it into their vehicle purchase. The company said it supports the South Korea-based automaker’s goal of making EVs more accessible and affordable “by removing common cost and infrastructure barriers associated with home charging.”
