The first Mercedes AMG GT was a full-throated performance car, and its wild Black Series variant briefly held the Nürburgring record for all production cars. By comparison, even the most track-focused variants of the new generation of AMG GT seem relatively tame. If the latest concept being teased by AMG is any indication, the sports car may not be held back for much longer.

These photos are the first previews of a concept car that Affalterbach is calling the Concept AMG GT Track Sport. The performance-focused Mercedes sub-brand says that this concept is a "hint" that "the GT family is not yet complete," suggesting that the concept could lead to either a seriously performance-focused variant of the existing 2+2 Mercedes-AMG GT, or a new model in the AMG GT line.

Mercedes-AMG also says that the concept previews a "possible expansion of the GT series with a V-8 engine," indicating that the final car would join four other existing AMG GT variants with eight-cylinder power. Those models range from the 469-hp GT 55 to the 805-hp GT 63 S E-Performance plug-in hybrid, leaving a wide range of possible outputs for the Track Sport road car.

Since the existing AMG GT is a 2+2 already positioned against various parts of the Porsche 911 line, a production model of the AMG GT Track Sport could make sense as a direct rival to the existing 911 GT3. If that is the goal for Mercedes, it seems likely that the final road car derived from the Track Sport concept could receive the Black Series designation last seen on the previous-generation AMG GT.
